Fans have criticised "The Real Housewives of Durban" reality star Londie London and presenter Shamiso Mosaka online for comments they made about Tyla's outfit at the NAACP Image Awards, which sparked backlash.
The pair, alongside entertainment commentator Phil Mphela, recently launched their new show “Read the Room” on "The Podcast and Chill Network". The network reshuffle was announced on February 24, introducing several new shows and presenters.
During their debut episode, the hosts discussed red carpet moments in the entertainment industry and shared their honest opinions about different celebrity looks. Tyla’s appearance on the NAACP Image Awards blue carpet became one of the talking points.
While the singer’s look received praise in many fashion spaces, the hosts admitted they were not completely feeling it.
“I love Tyla down. She’s a star. For me, the dress looks more like a slip dress that you maybe wear underneath another dress,” said Mosaka
She added that the styling felt uneven to her. “I feel like the hair and make-up said so much effort, and then the outfit said, I’m chilling.”
London also shared her view, suggesting the relaxed look may have been intentional.
“I think it was deliberate because I felt like she was just trying to look like ‘ooh, I just woke up now’,” she said.
The conversation then shifted to whether multi-award-winning star Tyla even had a reason to attend the ceremony.
“First of all, she had nothing to do with those awards, right?” Londie said, before the hosts suggested the event mainly recognises actors and actresses.
However, Tyla had a very clear reason to be there. The Johannesburg-born star won “Outstanding International Song” for her hit song “Is It”, becoming the first South African artist to win an NAACP Image Award.
The A-pop star stepped onto the blue carpet at the NAACP Image Awards at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Los Angeles wearing a sleek black body-hugging dress with thick straps and a U-shaped neckline.
The ankle-length dress kept things minimal, allowing her accessories to stand out.
She paired the look with Christian Louboutin Rosalie Jewel heels, which feature crystal detailing that has been trending widely on TikTok.
The real statement, however, was the jewellery. Tyla wore a Jacob & Co diamond choker reportedly worth about $4.2 million (around R67 million), along with matching teardrop earrings estimated at $3 million (roughly R48 million).
Her hair was styled in a messy bun with a side fringe, completing the clean and effortless look. Even as the hosts critiqued the outfit, they still acknowledged Tyla’s presence on the carpet.
“She looked cute. I mean, she is Tyla at the end of the day,” London said, adding that she felt the dress could have had “more work” and that it could have used “some bedazzle”.
Mosaka agreed that the look leaned casual, while London added a comment that caught attention online. “No, I have that dress. I wear it when I’m cleaning my house,” she said.
Clips from the discussion made the rounds on social media, and fans did not hold back in the comments.
Some felt the hosts missed the point of the styling, noting that the simplicity of the dress allowed Tyla’s jewellery to stand out.
“They don't understand fashion…simple and chic can eat as well, not everything has to always be bedazzled and loud. That jewellery spoke enough iykyk (if you know, you know),” wrote @Tayy.
Another user shared the same sentiment.
“Y'all forgetting she had on diamonds worth 4million, the dress had to be simple for the jewellery to stand out,” commented @LeeAnnB.
Others called the hosts out for questioning Tyla’s presence at the event in the first place.
“She actually won the best international song award, so the awards definitely had something (to do) with her,” wrote @iamsimah.
“She literally won an award for ‘Is It’ so she had to be there. Let’s do research people,” added @n.
