Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi has stepped into the spotlight to address the mixed reactions surrounding the club’s recent acquisition of striker Tashreeq Morris from SuperSport United.
The 30-year-old marksman has joined the Amakhosi for the second half of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season, following a swap deal that saw Christian Saile transition to SuperSport United and reunite with coach Gavin Hunt.
While the signing initially sparked criticism from the Chiefs' passionate fanbase — many of whom questioned Morris's track record in front of goal — Nabi has come out in defence of the decision, insisting that the new recruits are strategically chosen to enhance the squad's offensive prowess.
The Cape Town born forward has scored 33 goals and recorded 14 assists in his 203 top flight appearance having represented Ajax Cape Town, Cape Town City, Sekhukhune United and most recently SuperSport United.

“Every time you recruit new players, you have to do your due diligence to get the right fit for your team,” Nabi explained.
“We feel that we did due diligence to get the players who could help right away because in January, you need to bring in a player that’s ready to help immediately; it’s not like in the big window (off-season).”
Morris's debut performances for Chiefs speak to the confidence Nabi has in him.
He has made his mark in two consecutive games, including a thrilling 2-2 draw against AmaZulu last Tuesday and a narrow 1-0 victory over Stellenbosch FC at Athlone Stadium this past Friday.
His inclusion in the starting line-up in each of these matches seems to indicate that he may play an integral role in the coach’s tactical setup moving forward.
In addition to Morris, the January transfer window proved fruitful for the Amakhosi, with the team also signing former South African junior international Thabo Cele and Glody Lilepo.
Cele, who joined on a free transfer after parting ways with Russian club FC Fakel Voronezh, and Lilepo, who made the move from French side Valenciennes FC, are both seen as valuable additions to bolster the squad.
Nabi went on to reiterate his faith in Morris while addressing the initial scepticism.

“I believe that most people were surprised that he’s coming to Kaizer Chiefs, but you have to see the qualities he brings to the team. Now we can play the ball up; he can hold it for us and give us enough time to get up there,” he remarked.
This statement illustrates Nabi’s tactful approach and his intent to instil confidence in both the new players and the supporters.
Nabi's comments reflect a commitment to building a squad that not only meets the immediate challenges of the current season but also aligns with the club's broader vision for success in the Premiership.
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Morris and his capability to fulfil the expectations that accompany a move to one of South Africa’s most revered clubs.
Chiefs will turn their focus to their Nedbank Cup round of 16 challenge against Chippa United on Saturday.
