Johannesburg - Voting was a family affair for many at Westview park voting station in Randburg this morning.
The spiraling queue formed at 7am was separated into two alphabetically by surname.
Proud parents of first time voters, Elanie and Thys Kruger, brought their whole brood of 3 children, including their dog, Gabi for the momentous occasion in their children's lives.
“The year she was born,” Elanie said, turning towards her 22 year daughter Leandri Heystek, “It was the dawn of democracy and I was standing in the queue full-term pregnant.'.
Heystek said that she felt strongly about voting as she believed democracy was enhanced by competition between the political parties.
For Nico and Corne Brink standing in the lively morning queue presented a pleasant opportunity to meet a new people, including a couple from France who was voting for the first time.
“We got here at 7am, there is beautiful weather and we think tomorrow will be a very interesting day. I think this is all for the better of the country and may help the rand too,” Nico said.
For domestic worker, Kelina Xaba, who has lived with the same employer in the area for 30 years, voting was just about fulfilling her civil duty and abiding by the law.
Many praised the fast moving queue, which allowed some to carry on with their morning jogs and errands.
