Lukhanyo Calata, the Cape Town parliamentary reporter who led the charge in the Western Cape against apparent censorship at the public broadcaster, was on Monday charged with contravening SABC rules.

Calata, the son of Struggle activist Fort Calata of the “Cradock Four”, confirmed that he had been informed he would face disciplinary action – something he predicted while participating in a media-led protest at the SABC’s Cape Town offices on Friday.

He confirmed he would oppose the charge, which relates to him having spoken out.

“I am from a family of fighters,” he said.

Calata had criticised the SABC’s controversial decision to no longer report on protests in the country, receiving widespread support for his stance.

The charge makes Calata the seventh SABC employee targeted for voicing concern about censorship at the broadcaster. African News Agency
