The glamour boys remain at the top of the table with 45 points while the recently on-form Sea Robbers took the second spot with 36 points over the past weekend.

The buccaneers were struggling before the December holidays but have in recent weeks proven the old adage true “a new broom sweeps cleaner” as they’ve collected much needed points since the appointment of Josef Zinnbauer as head coach.

The German mentor guided the Sea Robbers to six wins and a single draw in the seven matches he has been in charge of since December.

The “change of fortunes” for the ‘Soweto Giants’ has inspired its fans to proclaim their team capable of contending for the PSL tittle.

But the club’s head coach says his side is likely not going to be able to challenge for the championship.

'Amabhakabhaka' moved into second place after beating Chippa United 2-1 on Saturday - their fifth consecutive league win under Zinnbauer. However, Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits both have games in hand over the Soweto giants and Zinnbauer knows they will most likely leapfrog his team.

"Number two? It's for a moment," Zinnbauer said on FarPast. "We know the other teams are not on the same number of games as us. They are a few games behind us, should they win then number two is done and settled."

Ernest Makhaya the editor in chief for football website Goal.com in South Africa says Zinnbauer should be commended for Pirates' turnaround of fortunes but winning the league in the remaining nine league games could be an unrealistic target.

“Pirates dropped too many points when it mattered the most, while they conceded a lot of goals in the process. Chiefs, on the other hand, did the difficult job early in the season and need 15 points to surpass last season's title-winning points of 59 which Sundowns amassed after 30 games,” said Makhaya.

He adds, “this requires Chiefs to win their next five games and with 11 games still to play, Ernst Middendorp's men can easily achieve that with ease due to their great form thus far.”

Meanwhile, the tail end of the PSL continues to be undecided as Polokwane City, Amazulu, Black Leopards, Baroka FC and even Cape Town City remained in danger.

Although Cape Town City is 7 points clearer of Polokwane City – they are still within the relegation zone.
