Marathons have long been a test of endurance, discipline, and mental fortitude, but in 2025, certain races are capturing the world's attention like never before.
According to the latest Running Report from SportsShoes.com, some marathons have skyrocketed in popularity, drawing runners from all corners of the globe. Analysing Google search data for over 100 races worldwide, the report identifies the most sought-after long-distance events of the year.
At the very top of the list is the Beijing Marathon, which has seen an astonishing 386% increase in online searches year-on-year. This surge in interest is hardly surprising, given that the marathon takes participants on a breathtaking journey past some of Beijing’s most iconic landmarks, making it not just a race but a cultural experience.
Hot on Beijing’s heels is another Chinese race, the Shanghai Marathon, which has witnessed an impressive 126% growth in search interest. Established in 1996, this marathon has steadily grown in prominence, with last year’s event welcoming a staggering 38,000 runners from around the world.
Taking the third spot on the list is Japan’s Nagoya Women’s Marathon, a race that has long been celebrated as the largest women-only marathon globally. This year, its popularity has soared, with searches increasing by 104%, reflecting a broader shift in the running community. In 2024, men made up 70% of marathon participants, but in 2025, the gap has narrowed—60% male to 40% female—showcasing the growing participation of women in endurance racing.
Europe also boasts some of the most in-demand races this year, with Spain making a significant impact. Both the Seville Marathon and the Malaga Marathon have seen a 78% rise in interest, making them two of the continent’s most sought-after races. Their flat, scenic courses and temperate weather conditions have contributed to their growing appeal among marathoners looking for a challenge without extreme conditions.
While the majority of trending marathons are concentrated in Asia and Europe, Africa is making its mark as well. The Cape Town Marathon is among the only two African races to break into the top 20, boasting a remarkable 49% increase in interest year-over-year. Set against the stunning backdrop of Table Mountain and the Atlantic coastline, this marathon combines breathtaking scenery with a challenging yet rewarding course.
With 56% of runners either training for or participating in a competitive race this year, marathons continue to be a major goal for fitness enthusiasts worldwide. As new and historic races alike gain traction, 2025 is proving to be a landmark year for long-distance running. Whether it’s Beijing’s historic streets, the vibrant energy of Shanghai, or the empowering all-female experience in Nagoya, this year’s trending marathons showcase the diversity and dynamism of the global running community.
