There’s no better way to kick-off 2018 than with GQ cover star Jasmine Tookes
Discovered at just 16, Jasmine Tookes has quickly catapulted to modelling stardom. The 26-year-old has walked countless runways, lent her looks to a host of prestigious campaigns, and even had the honour of wearing the iconic Fantasy Bra at the 2016 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. We decided to get to know our summer issue cover star a little better.
GQ: Describe the annual VS Show to us in three words.
Jasmine Tookes: Extravagant. Surreal. Magical.
GQ: When you’ve walked the runway so many times for VS, how does your approach to the show change with experience?
JT: Actually, every year I get more and more nervous because I know how important that moment is. With so much going on backstage and on the runway, I really try and take in every moment because it all happens so fast.
GQ: Do you think your career might have differed without social media?
JT: I feel like social media has definitely affected my career because now models are able to have a voice. In the past, there was never a way for models to show their own personality to the world and they we were more like walking hangers. People would probably never know my fun and goofy side without my social media accounts. I really love letting people into my world and showing them all that makes me who I am.
GQ: You travel all over the world, but call the US home – where’s the most underrated escape in America that you like going to, and why?
JT: Orange County, CA is without a doubt America’s hidden gem. I grew up in Huntington Beach and whenever I go back I’m always in awe of how beautiful and peaceful it is. The OC has a very laid-back chill vibe, just like me!
GQ: When you go home to Huntington Beach, what’s the first thing you do that makes you feel like you’re back?
JT: Well I absolutely love good food so whenever I’m back I make sure I stop at all of my favourite Mexican spots. I always tell people Orange County has some of the best Mexican food. One in particular is called Mario’s – the best Chimichangas ever!
GQ: Your mother was a celebrity stylist; how has that affected your creative input around shoots and the sort of work you’re most proud of?
JT: I think I inherited my mother’s keen eye for what goes well together and how to execute a concept. Those instincts help on set and allow me to be directly part of the creative process rather than making someone else’s vision come to life because it’s mine as well!
GQ: Between Burning Man and Coachella, you seem like a festival pro. Any international festivals on your bucket list ahead or favourite highlights from the ones you’ve gone to this year?
JT: I absolutely love festivals and music. I don’t have any current plans for international festivals at the moment but I was thinking to try out Stagecoach this year. I always hear such good feedback about that one and I really enjoy dancing and singing along to country music.
GQ: You took a trip to Ecuador in the summer – do you feel like those sorts of holiday escapes and adventures are a major help in terms of your headspace, given how 24/7 and demanding work is when you’re in the city?
JT: I believe taking time for yourself no matter what career you may have is extremely important. Even if it’s just for a quick weekend getaway. You should always go into work with a clear and calm headspace so that you are able to give 100%.
GQ: If you could skip one thing that comes with the territory of your work, what would it be?
JT: Being away from my family.
GQ: What’s the best part of your job that you never expected would come with it?
JT: A really awesome group of friends. I grew up as an only child. Now with the Angels I have 13 sisters that I never had and I feel so grateful that I get to work with some of my best friends.
GQ: Tell us what’s exciting you most about 2018 that will be different from the year before?
JT: The phrase ‘New year, new me’ is so cliché, but in truth a new year is always about a fresh start. I’m excited for new opportunities with work, life and friends and to get the chance to keep improving overall.
