The song that made former president Nelson Mandela stand up and jive shortly after he was released from prison 20 years ago has been revamped and sung by international superstars for the official World Cup album.
The song Sekunjalo Ke Nako, meaning "Now is the Time" and penned by Cape Town-based singer and songwriter John Pretorius, has been included on Listen Up! The Official World Cup Album.
Sekunjalo Ke Nako was first performed in front of 120 000 people at the Grand Parade rally in Cape Town, hours after Mandela was released from 27 years in prison. It was a turning point in the history of the nation.
As the rally continued, Pretorius, then a school teacher, took the stage and, as he sang, Mandela broke into the now famous "Madiba Jive".
Ke Nako became Mandela's unofficial campaign song and he recalls the moment in his upcoming book, Conversations With Myself to be released in October.
Pretorius now goes by the name "J Pre" and he, along with international superstar Wyclef Jean, five-time Grammy nominee Jazmine Sullivan and this year's most-anticipated new artist, B Howard, perform the song.
Pretorius said: "This is wonderful news. It is a dream come true."
The song incorporates four of the main languages of South Africa - Sotho, Zulu, Xhosa and English.
This year marked the 20th anniversary of the day Mandela walked free from prison to a rally in his honour. As the world watched, Pretorius sang his heart out on Sekunjalo Ke Nako, a song he wrote for the occasion.
Sony Music Entertainment said it was honouring Ke Nako and its historical significance by including the revamped track on the album that would be released shortly.
J Pre's manager Jonnie Forster said other local artists on the CD included the Soweto Male Choir, the late Lucky Dube's band, the Cape Minstrels Musicians and the Boere Orchestra.
He said Ke Nako perfectly blended the rich history of Africa with the international pop sounds of today.
Forster said Fifa had obviously been influenced by the powerful message of the original song when it made it the official slogan of the World Cup.
Pretorius said: "Having Ke Nako on the official World Cup album is a great achievement for the people of South Africa as it strikes a chord to their hearts.
"With the help of Mr Mandela and the addition of Wyclef, Jazmine, and B Howard, the song's message of unity, peace, and love showcases Africa's humanity and humility."
B Howard said: "What a humbling honour it is to be able to part of Ke Nako - a song so dear to Mr Mandela and J Pre.
"Having my mentor Wyclef's passion and Jazmine's beautiful vocal will catapult Ke Nako across the globe and hopefully it will become the people's anthem."
