The Nigerian Football Association is planning a four-nation tournament in Lagos featuring Nigeria, Cameroon, Bafana Bafana and Egypt ahead of the 2002 World Cup finals in Korea and Japan.
The purpose of the tournament is to give African countries who have qualified for the World Cup a chance to "warm up" by playing one another. "Of course, as we know, Senegal pulled the carpet from under the feet of the Egyptians by booking tickets to the Far East instead," said a source.
"But Egypt are still a strong team and we should still have a memorable tournament."
Nigeria also looked in danger of failing to qualify until coach Jo Bonfrere was fired and replaced by Shaibu Amodu. They then went on a roll, winning their last five matches.
