Boebie Williams and his assistant Conti Kubheka drilled the national under-17 squad on Tuesday, concentrating on set-pieces, as they prepared to leave on Wednesday for a four-nation tournament in Portugal.

The under-17 squad, who narrowly missed qualifying for the African Junior Championship last year, has been invited to Lisbon to play Denmark, Sweden and the hosts.

They play Portugal on Saturday, Denmark on Sunday and round up the programme against Sweden on Tuesday.

In preparation for the tournament, the youngsters routed, among others, Vodacom League side Vaal Ambassadors (6-0) and a combined Moroka Swallows under-17 and under-19 side 12-0.

Williams drilled goalkeepers Martin Niewoudt and Matthew Hocksetter on how to take charge of the six yard area.

While little is known about the Swedes and the Danes, Williams said Bafana Bafana coach Carlos Queiroz has given him valuable information on the tactical ability of Portugal.

Williams said the tournament would give him an idea on which players to retain in order to mix them with a new squad to be selected from the Coca-Cola inter-provincial tournament during the winter school holidays.

While Cheeseman Mkhize and Cyril Zuma (Kaizer Chiefs), Lemmy Masilo (Arcadia) and Romano Scott (Ajax) impressed with their skills, Lance Davids caught the eye with his distribution and clinical finishing.

The boy's aggression and his cool head inside the penalty surely makes him a favourite for selection to the under-20 squad.
