Police have been called to a scene in Parkwood where the body of a newborn baby was discovered by shocked passers-by.

The baby was discovered with the umbilical cord still attached.

Police have since opened an inquest docket after the baby was found lying in an open field along Walmer Road and the M5 on Monday morning.

Police spokesperson, Captain FC Van Wyk explained: “On September 29, at approximately 7.20am, Grassy Park police members responded to a complaint regarding a baby laying in a field between Walmer Road and the M5. Upon arrival, members discovered the body of a male infant, with the umbilical cord still attached.

“The baby was declared deceased on the scene by paramedics.

“An inquest docket has been registered at Grassy Park SAPS for further investigation.

“Anyone with information about this incident is kindly requested to contact the investigating officer Detective Sergeant Gregory Kleinhans at 079 894 1307 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.”

The Grassy Park Community Policing Forum (CPF) also made an appeal to residents, asking for information about a mother who may have been pregnant and may have dumped her baby.

“The incident must have happened during the early hours of the morning," the CPF said in a statement shared publicly.

"We are urging the community who are aware of who the suspects are involved in these heinous crimes, to come forward.

"It is one of the saddest things to see, throwing a life away.

"We urge the community of Parkwood, if you know someone who was pregnant for nine months and you find out this person does not know where the baby is, visit the police station and make a statement.

“Throwing a human life away, that is the future that has been dumped."

“Community, open your heart and minds, if you know of someone who did this crime.”
