Kraaifontein residents were horrified after finding a dead baby in a bin on Wednesday morning.

The deceased newborn was found in a waste bin in Zono Street around 8.30am.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said that the matter is under investigation.

Kraaifontein police registered a concealment of birth case for investigation after the body of a baby was found in a waste bin in Zono Street, Bloekombos, on Wednesday morning, August 13, at about 08:30.

"The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation and no arrests have been made yet.”

Juanita du Preez, spokesperson for Action Society said unwanted pregnancies can be overwhelming, but abandoning or killing a child can never be the solution.

Du Preez said: “We are deeply disturbed by yet another heartbreaking case where a newborn baby was found dumped in a bin in Kraaifontein.

"Every child has the right to life, dignity, and protection. To discard a baby in this manner is not only a crime but also a tragic reflection of desperation and the breakdown of social support systems.

"South Africa has safe and legal alternatives for mothers in crisis, such as placing babies in the care of designated ‘baby saver’ facilities, child protection organisations, or directly with the Department of Social Development.

"These options ensure that children are protected and given a chance at life, while mothers receive the support they need.

"The repeated stories of infants being dumped in bins and open fields highlight a national crisis that requires urgent intervention.

"Government and civil society must work together to raise awareness of safe alternatives, strengthen community support, and ensure accountability.

"At Action Society, we continue to advocate for vulnerable children and call on authorities to prioritise both prevention and protection.

"No child should ever be discarded. Every baby deserves a chance to live and to be loved.”
