FlySafair has announced that it has finally reached a breakthrough agreement with the South African Cabin Crew Association (SACCA), bringing an end to the labour dispute that has stretched over several weeks.
IOL previously reported that the airline and the union had been at loggerheads after SACCA rejected the company’s earlier wage and conditions offer, leading to an employer-initiated lockout and several rounds of CCMA-facilitated talks.
They had offered salary increases ranging from 6% to 6.9% each year, a guaranteed 7.5% annual bonus, additional allowances and progression increases, as well as improvements to uniform and commission structures, which the union initially rejected.
However, in a statement on Friday, the airline confirmed that the two parties had now reached a settlement largely in line with the original proposal.
"The conclusion of this process marks the achievement of extended multi-year agreements with both unions representing FlySafair’s pilots and cabin crew, ensuring labour stability among crew for the next four years. The final agreement reached with SACCA is materially similar to the proposal tabled by the company last Friday," the airline said.
"While the company notes with some regret that earlier acceptance would have spared union members the hardship of a further unpaid week,FlySafair reiterates its full respect for the collective bargaining process and the rights of employees to engage in negotiation through their chosen representatives".
The airline added that it "now looks ahead to a period of continued growth and operational reliability as it ramps up capacity ahead of the G20 summit and the busy festive travel season".
“We’re very pleased to have reached an agreement that provides long-term stability and recognises the valuable contribution of our cabin crew,” Kirby Gordon, Chief Marketing Officer at FlySafair, said.
“This agreement allows us to move forward with confidence into an important period for both the company and the broader aviation sector.”
