Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has called for proposals from qualified companies to build and manage a new cold storage terminal for fish and related products at the Port of Cape Town.

The proposed terminal will be developed on a 7,273 m² site located near the ship repair and liquid bulk areas of the port. The facility will allow frozen fish to be transferred directly from vessels into cold storage, helping streamline exports and boost the Western Cape’s fishing industry.

According to TNPA, the project aims to improve efficiency in the seafood logistics chain and support economic growth in the region.

The selected operator will be responsible for financing, refurbishing, constructing, operating, and maintaining the terminal for a 10-year concession period before handing it back to TNPA.

This project forms part of TNPA’s long-term Port Development Framework Plan, which includes relocating break bulk operations to the Multi-Purpose Precinct between 2032 and 2052.

Cape Town Port Manager Rajesh Dana said the initiative addresses growing demand for modern cold storage and aligns with Transnet’s “Reinvent for Growth” strategy, which focuses on improving infrastructure and operations through private sector partnerships.

A non-compulsory briefing session for interested bidders will be held on October 21, 2025. RFP documents are available on the National Treasury’s e-tender portal (www.etender.gov.za) and the Transnet website (www.transnet.net).
