The National Gambling Board (NGB) has sounded the alarm over a surge in illegal online gambling, warning South Africans to avoid unlicensed websites as enforcement efforts are stepped up.

The NGB said the move was "in collaboration with Provincial Licensing Authorities (PLAs) and law enforcement agencies,".

According to the gambling watchdog, the move to intensify its effort to curb illegal gambling follows concern "over the proliferation of unlicensed gambling websites and platforms targeting South African consumers, often without regard for local gambling laws or consumer protection".

Earlier this year, IOL reported that Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau revealed that the National Gambling Board (NGB) had recorded at least 90 online gambling websites that are currently operating illegally in South Africa.

The watchdog reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of South Africa’s gambling sector.

"As the gambling regulation fraternity, we remain unwavering in enforcing the law — online gambling is unlawful and unacceptable". Acting Chief Executive Officer of the NGB, Lungile Dukwana, said.

"Through targeted enforcement, inter-agency cooperation and public education, we are protecting South Africans from illegal gambling harm, unfair operators, and illicit financial flows. Our commitment is clear: ensuring that gambling in South Africa remains safe, fair, and licensed.”

The gambling board added that unlawful "online gambling has expanded rapidly, driven by economic pressures and the accessibility ofoffshore operators and unlicensed platforms, particularly after COVID-19".

"To combat this, where an offshore operator is identified and is licensed in another jurisdiction, the NGB engages the respective regulator to address the licensee's illegal activities in South Africa.

"The NGB and PLAs also work closely with law enforcement agencies, financial institutions, and internet service providers to disrupt illegal platforms".

The board also added that other enforcement methods include monitoring financial transactions to trace illicit flows, working with internet service providers to block access to illegal sites, and conducting raids on unlicensed internet cafes and gambling establishments.
