The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) have denied recent social media reports alleging the launch of a once-off R12,500 youth grant.
This follows the circulation of a viral video and several social media posts falsely claiming that a new financial grant had been introduced for unemployed youth between the ages of 18 and 35.
The posts also alleged that the grant would provide R12,500 to individuals not currently receiving any government assistance.
In a post on X formerly (Twitter), Sassa dismissed the reports and described them as fake news.
"SASSA warns its beneficiaries and the public at large against the below FAKE information which does not come from SASSA," the agency said.
Meanwhile, NYDA also took to its social media accounts and distanced itself from the posts.
"Please be advised that this call for applications (as seen and heard on this video) is NOT linked to the NYDA. We are not offering any once-off R12,500 Youth Grant," the NYDA said.
The agency also urged the members of the public not to share their personal information with anyone.
"Applications for NYDA programmes are done through our ERP Portal: https://erp.nyda.gov.za/. Please DO NOT send your personal information to anyone".
IOL also previously reported that SASSA has moved to calm the nerves of millions of social grant beneficiaries following the circulation of a fake video on social media, which "falsely claims that all recipients must re-register or risk losing their grants".
