Wandie Mesetywa, 28, recently completed a two-month course in artistry from a local galley, and is now showcasing her work, which tackles the issue of identity.
Mesetywa will showcase her latest project Iqhiya, which means “doek” at the My Identity show at Amplify Studio.
Mesetywa said she wants to promote doek-wearing among women.
Her cultural background played a pivotal role in understanding the significance of the doek, she said, and the idea for her showcase came about when she was at a funeral in Ngcobo in the Eastern Cape.
Mesetywa had taken photographs of old and young women.
“I grew up in the Eastern Cape in Qumbu then I moved to Queenstown, which was a world apart, but still more cultural than Cape Town. A doek is always something I know that is relevant to my culture and it is not only the married women that wear (a) doek. It can be old and young,” she said.

Entry to the exhibition is free and runs every day from 8am until 5pm.
