Ashlin Ellan, a community leader and cultural advocate, has been selected to represent South Africa on the Tamil Nadu Government’s Reaching Your Roots educational tour.
The initiative aims to connect Tamil youth in the diaspora with their heritage; fostering an appreciation for the Tamil language, culture, and traditions.
The two-week tour, scheduled from December 29 to January 12, will take participants across Tamil Nadu to explore historic landmarks, cultural heritage sites, and language immersion programs.
Ellan, 28, who is the only South African selected for the trip, is the youth ambassador and public relations officer for RAGE Community Outreach.
“Over the years, he has held key leadership positions, including being the chairman of the Green Buddies Environmental Club since 2016, youth coordinator of the Hindu Unity Forum of South Africa, and secretary of the Greenwood Park Shree Ranganathar Temple Society. His roles have focused on empowering youth, promoting environmental sustainability, and upholding Tamil cultural values,” said Charles Naidoo, the chairman of RAGE.
The tour will include visits to various Tamil archaeological sites, historical monuments, UNESCO World Heritage sites, and educational institutions, as well as interactions with experts in the fields of Tamil art, culture, archaeology, and research.
"This tour will help the participants appreciate the excellence of ancient Tamil civilisation in various areas such as arts and literature, architecture, sculpture, administration systems, attire, and cuisines."
Ellan, a teacher at Avoca Primary School, said: “This opportunity is not just about learning; it’s about building bridges between our roots and our present. I am honoured to serve as a cultural ambassador and bring the stories and values of Tamil Nadu back to South Africa. Everyone is supportive and excited for me and this opportunity.”
