John Kani receives Order of the British Empire recognising his contributions to the arts

Dr John Kani, a renowned multi-disciplinary actor, director, and playwright, has been honoured with the most excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) by King Charles in recognition of his contributions, which for many years have inspired and brought people together across the world.

This award for “services to drama” was presented to Kani by British High Commissioner to the Republic of South Africa, Antony Phillipson, in appreciation of his work.

“It was my honour to present Dr John Kani with an honorary OBE awarded by HM King Charles for “services to drama” in recognition of his work that has inspired and united so many around the world for so many decades. Thank you, Minister @GaytonMcK, for joining us.’’

Gayton Mckenzie, Sports, Arts, and Culture minister, was also present at the handover and spoke fondly about Kani on social media, where he shared how inspired he was by him.

“It was a great honour to speak at the handing over of Dr John Kani’s OBE this evening at the home of the British High Commissioner. Listening to a living legend’s passion to pass on the baton to the next generation was a true inspiration. Thank you, Bra John.”

His son, Atandwa Kani, also posted about these news on Instagram, stating: “Kani has been honoured with the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by King Charles III. That’s Sir Dr. Mr. Tat’uKani to you... and most definitely to me too.”

Businesswoman Gina Din from Kenya emphasised how Kani’s influence will last for future generations.

“Such an honour to witness King Charles IIII confer the OBE on the legendary John Kani. Thank you, British High Commissioner Antony Phillipson, for expertly conducting the ceremony and hosting us. Dr. Kani's impact will resonate for generations to come,” she said.

Dr Kani was also recently recognised as a ‘style icon’ by the SA Style Awards.

Having founded a drama school to assist African American youth without access to higher education, Kani has played a significant role in the growth of the arts and theatre.

He has won multiple honours, including the Tony Award on Broadway, the John F Kennedy Medal, and most recently, the Voices in Freedom Award from Shared Interest in New York.

Kani continues to have an impact on the global arts and cultural industries with his distinctive and powerful story-lines, deft delivery, and genuine portrayal of people.
