The executive mayor of Matjhabeng Municipality, Thanduxolo Khalipha, has introduced NOA, the company selected to lead the ambitious Khautha Solar Project.
This 350MW solar initiative, backed by a R4.4 billion investment, promises to be a game-changer for the Matjhabeng Local Municipality in the Free State, positioning it as a diversified industrial hub while addressing the nation’s energy crisis.
Set to operate for 30 years, the solar plant will generate an impressive 900 GWH of power annually, providing electricity to about 250 000 homes in Matjhabeng.
This project aims not only to bolster energy supply but also to foster economic and socio-economic development through a comprehensive plan influenced by municipal and community feedback.
“The Khautha Solar Project is more than just an energy initiative; it’s a catalyst for economic transformation in Matjhabeng,” said Khalipha.
“Our focus on economic development and socio-economic development plans ensures that this project benefits our community at every level. Engaging with the Riebeeckstad community was invaluable, and their input is critical to ensuring the success and alignment of this project with local needs.
“We are committed to creating job opportunities and fostering a thriving local economy through this initiative. This project is a significant stride towards solving South Africa’s energy crisis while also uplifting our local community.”
The community of Matjhabeng also engaged directly with Khalipha and the mayoral committee, seeking clarification on various aspects of the project and contributing valuable input. He said the dialogue ensured that the project aligned with the needs and aspirations of the local population, reinforcing its community-centred approach.
The Khautha Solar Project is poised not only to address energy shortages but also to drive substantial economic growth and community development in Matjhabeng.
“As the project moves forward, it stands as a testament to the municipality’s commitment to a brighter, more sustainable future,” Khalipha said.
