Reigning league champions Mamelodi Sundowns have announced the appointment of Frenchman Romain Folz as their new assistant coach.

Folz, a former AmaZulu and Marumo Gallants head coach, joins a technical team that is headed up by Manqoba Mngqithi, and includes Steve Komphela, Wendell Robinson and Kennedy Mweene.

“Romain joins the 2023/24 PSL Champions from FIFA’s High-Performance Department where he worked on the development of football,” the club said in a statement on Monday.

“Folz, who holds a UEFA Pro License has previously worked in South Africa and across Africa in Guinea, Botswana, and Ghana.

“Mamelodi Sundowns players and Technical Team have warmly received Romain into the camp in Austria where they are on a pre season camp.

“The Club will play more competitive matches in the next few days as part of the ongoing pre season preparations.”

The off-season has been one of upheaval at the champions. Last month, they said goodbye to Rulani Mokwena, who was fired despite leading the club to a seventh straight league title.

After Mokwena’s firing, Mngqithi was promoted to the head coach position, and Komphela was brought back from Golden Arrows as a senior coach.

For Mokwena, he immediately landed on his feet following his firing, and was appointed head coach of Moroccan giants Wydad Casblanca.

Dates for the start of the new season are yet to be announced by the PSL, who are currently in the process of changing sponsors.
