Durban - Musgrave residents were alarmed when Vause Road in the upmarket suburb was sealed off on Thursday morning as SANDF, police and private security swarmed into the area.
Officers moved rapidly into the drive of a property which was described by neighbours as previously providing accommodation for SANDF members.
A local resident said there were a number of SANDF houses on the property which had been left vacant and then occupied by squatters.
Two SANDF trucks were each loaded with goods before being driven away.
In a media statement yesterday, Brigadier General Andries Mokoena Mahapa said SANDF Army Support Base (ASB) KwaZulu-Natal conducted an eviction order granted by a local court against a foreign national (Nigerian) woman and her relatives to vacate a military house.
He said the woman had been married to an SANDF official, who had since retired, divorced the woman and left the property which had been allocated to him as per the SANDF housing scheme.
The woman had invited her relatives to stay at the property.
The Military Police, SAPS Berea, K9 Unit and local private security companies assisted in searching the property for illicit goods or criminal activity that may have been conducted there.
Mahapa confirmed that “a high number of new and used electronic equipment and bicycles which the occupants failed to account for” were confiscated and the occupants of the house were evicted.
“The matter is under investigation by the relevant military and law enforcement officials,” said Mahapa.
