In 2025, movies are about to be spoiled for choice with many local productions being announced.
Top South African actor Bonko Khoza continues on his winning streak, showing fans his versatility as an actor with the kind of roles he takes on. Khoza leads the cast of crime-action movie “City of Gold”.
Khoza takes on the role of Somandla, a determined and tormented gangster haunted by his father’s death. In the first released images from the Lucky Rhino production, Khoza is seen having undergone quite the transformation for the character; looking buff and with a beard.
"Honoured to be part of City of Gold, a project that pushes the boundaries of South African storytelling. Grateful for the journey, the team, and the magic we created. Can’t wait for the world to see this," shared Khoza on Instagram.
The South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTA) Best Actor - Telenovela winner also has executive producer credits for “City of Gold”, a clear indication of his growth in the industry.
"City of Gold" is brought to life by the creative partnership of Neo Baloyi and Fabien Martorell, both of whom are no strangers to creating stories that resonate globally.
“This film is deeply rooted in the vibrancy and struggles of Johannesburg, but its themes are universal,” said producer Neo Baloyi. “It’s about resilience, identity, and the choices that define us.”
Actor Brandon Auret, gritty performance as a corrupt cop adds layers of menace, to the story, Gaosi Raditholo, shines as a determined policewoman on a personal mission, and Given Stuurman, shows depth with character Musa, Somandla's brother, the only person who he trusts.
Stuurman is also on a roll when it comes to securing roles, after being off screens for a while. Last year he appeared on Mandla N’s Black Brain Pictures “Piano Love”.
The ensemble cast also features Vuyo Dabula, Louis Vega, Moss Makwati, Thabo Gabriel Malema, Otto Nobela, Kagiso Rathebe, Gontse Ntshegang, and Daniel Janks.
Martorell adds, “Johannesburg isn’t just a backdrop—it’s a character, and its energy is felt in every frame. With City of Gold, we’ve created something that’s as gritty as it is poignant, as thrilling as it is heartfelt.”
Global release dates are yet to be announced.
