Singer Rethabile Khumalo recently shared a video of her late mother, Winnie Khumalo, discussing the lack of family support during tough times.
The video, originally from an interview Winnie did about a year ago on “Cold War TV”, offers a glimpse into her thoughts on the complexities of family relationships.
Winnie, who passed away on Tuesday, January 7, after falling ill, opened up in the interview about her personal experiences with family.
She spoke about how family members often don’t offer assistance during challenging times but are quick to show up for a funeral, even travelling long distances.
“They don’t like it when you progress. Even when you have problems, it’s your friends who jump to help, not family,” she shared.
The Khumalo family has endured significant hardships. In June, Winnie made a public plea for prayers as Rethabile battled severe poisoning, allegedly caused by friends.
Rethabile was hospitalised for six days and underwent three operations. Winnie’s heartfelt message to her supporters revealed the depth of her concern: “The difficulty of being a parent ... Please include her in your prayers.”
In the interview, Winnie also reflected on her upbringing in Mfolo North, Soweto. She shared memories of being a tomboy and playing soccer in her youth, fondly recalling her days on the backline.
However, the most impactful part of the interview is her commentary on family relationships.
“We used to think that family comes first but, today, if you fall, they celebrate. They don’t visit you when you’re sick but they’ll travel from KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape to bury you,” she added.
For Rethabile, sharing this video after her mother’s passing speaks volumes about the bond they shared and the struggles they faced together.
It’s a deeply personal insight into the challenges Winnie navigated and the strength she carried, even in the face of disappointment from those closest to her.
The life of Khumalo will be celebrated during her memorial service at The Market Theatre in Johannesburg on Wednesday, January 15, at noon.
